What began as a reform movement in the 1870s is now a defining feature of funeral culture in Germany: cremation.
Of the approximately one million people who die in Germany each year, more than 750,000 are cremated. Therefore, it seems only fitting to commemorate 150 years of cremation in Germany with an exhibition.
In retrospect, the commissioning of the first crematoria during the German Empire proved to be a fundamental step towards a revolution in funeral culture that is still ongoing today.
